Halal olive oil in Malaysia: what to check
Pure olive oil has no animal ingredients. So what is actually being checked?
10 October 2026 · 1 min read
Pure olive oil is fruit juice — no animal ingredients, no alcohol. So why does halal certification still matter? Because what is checked is not only the ingredient but the whole chain: the processing facility, processing aids, equipment cleaning, bottling and storage.
How to check
- Look for the name of the body issuing or recognising the certificate, not just the word "halal" on the label
- In Malaysia the reference point is JAKIM — either JAKIM certification or a foreign body JAKIM recognises
- Be wary of generic halal logos with no issuing body or certificate number
- Check that the certificate refers to the same product and the same plant
Grade matters too
Refined olive oil goes through more complex chemical and heat processing than extra virgin, which is only mechanically pressed. Fewer processing steps means fewer points to verify.
Olivko is Halal recognised by JAKIM, and also holds Ecocert, USDA Organic, EU Organic, FSSC 22000 and BRCGS certification, and is FDA registered.
